Green Seas / De Groene Zee is published! And written on the road!

We love travelling. We love diving. We love taking pictures. We love writing and publishing, and have published three books together, and contributed to many others.

This month, our fourth book was published: Green Seas / De Groene Zee.

It has 240 pages and 450 pictures. Many are made by Peter, but we also were granted the use of the best work of Dutch and Belgian photographers – who each have their own expertise. Peter is a wide angle specialist, focussing on larger marine life large sharks and rays and seascapes and drone photography, others are specialist in macro life! So why not get the best of ALL worlds? And we were really happy that all photographers we approached did indeed contribute!

We are also very happy with our sponsors:

  • Wereld Natuur Fonds
  • Sportvisserij Nederland
  • Nationaal Park Oosterschelde
  • Stichting de Noordzee
  • Natuurmonumenten
  • Dutch Shark Society

We first wrote a concept, and sourced our own and other photographs to add. Which subjects just HAD to be covered? We added several chapters about nature conservation and research, like the one on plastic pollution. But there is also info about the mussel and oyster culture, fisheries and coastal works that are carried out to protect Holland against the seas.

The book was roughly based on the previous version, but has many chapters and unique photographs. And much of it was written on the road!

So how do you go about when writing on the road? It is so tempting to explore new venues when travelling, and have long, leisurely lunches. And that is what we do – often. So writing and photo editing and selection is for the mornings… Setting up a schedule of the stuff you want to get done every day is the first important step, even when travelling. Each morning was dedicated to ‘The Book’, and we almost always started discussing chapters and the pictures we wanted to use. Only after a full morning’s work, we would go out for a late lunch and some sightseeing. We always rent an appartment so working is much easier than in a smaller hotel room.
Many times occasions, we decided we just had to get another picture in, that we still had to take…

So we made a lot of trips to Zeeland or the Dutch dune coast with cameras and drone. One subject led to another: if we write about mussels, we have to write about lobsters too… If we write about plastic pollution, there should also be a chapter about ghostfishing… and so on, and so on! The book travelled with us for many months before it was finished and we were happy.
Then followed a month of text corrections, picture editing, checking proofs and setting up sales with our publishers!

This book has been written in Ireland, Italy and England, but is all about our ‘own’ North Sea. Enjoy!
